This page gives a really helpful description of how to change your layout. It shows you how to keep widgets and other changes you've made to this template, but you can just skip those steps if you don't have any.

That site was also where I found my layout, but if you google "blogger templates" there are loads of sites out there. Some of the templates are xml and some are "simple," and there's a difference (but I don't really understand what it is haha), so watch out for that.
yeah, it confused me too; i didnt have a program that could open the file and i thought that meant it was no good. But you just tell it to upload when you're on the edit profile page.... i promise it works..... =P
